Will the Bike Trail Be Expanded through the Park?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

The question of extending the bike trail past its northernmost point in South Wellfleet will be on the agenda of the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission at its June 19, 2009, meeting at 1:00 pm at Park Headquarters.

The potential impact of the bike trail, its construction, and the quantity of people using it and the adjacent ponds, woods, and Herring River are matters of interest and concern to homeowners in the Park.

Wind Turbines Advancing at White Crest Site

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The Town of Wellfleet and its Alternate Energy Committee are reviewing the feasibility of wind turbines for electricity generation at a Town-owned site near White Crest Beach.  The project is summarized as follows:

“The Town of Wellfleet is working with MTC [Massachusetts Technology Collaborative] to explore the feasibility of developing a wind turbine project on municipally-owned land. In October 2005, the UMass Renewable Energy Research Laboratory conducted a Preliminary Site Analysis at locations chosen by the municipality to determine an appropriate site to explore feasibility. In October 2006, working with the Town, UMass RERL installed a MET tower on White Crest Beach, just off Ocean View Drive. There was concern that the project would be subject to restrictions by the FAA due to the site’s proximity to the North Truro Long Range Joint Use Radar site. However, in October 2007 the FAA issued a favorable “Determination of no Hazard” to airspace navigation and radar. Wellfleet’s application for Community Wind Turbine Feasibility Study was subsequently approved by MTC in October 2007. Since then, the Town has been working with MTC and a Community Wind technical consultant to evalaute the feasibility of the White Crest Beach site for a Community Wind project. The Town is currently reviewing draft feasibility study results.”

It will be on the agenda for the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Committee’s meeting on June 19, 2009.
